Space Debris: How do we solve the problem of dead satellites?

With the increasing number of governments and private companies able to send satellites into space, the space around the planet is getting tighter.

According to some estimates, less than half of the satellites currently in orbit are operational.

But what can be done to prevent these broken machines from becoming a threat to the machines we still rely on?
