annual report prepared by Cockroach Laboratories finds statistically dead heat between three major cloud providers. The report evaluates performance AWS, Azure and GCP General Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) for workloads. Testing shows that all three cloud providers offer price-competitive options for OLTP applications, as well as high levels of performance, which offer a change in the market as the industry matures in terms of operation and standardization of linear price models.
This year, the report compared 56 instance types and 107 discrete configurations and performed more than 3,000 operations on the following broad axes, including OLTP performance, CPU performance, network performance, and storage I / O Performance. In addition, this year’s report improved the test design configuration for all tests and conducted additional tests for different sized sample types; interregional delay; memory tests with fsync; variable OLTP workload complexity; and 12 times longer transmission time than previously 60 seconds for each test and up to 12 minutes for each test.
The report shows that AMD outperforms Intel in terms of overall performance: machines with AMD Milan (EPYC Gen 3) processors ranked highest in both CPU comparison and OLTP testing for both large and small sample types. In previous years, Intel led the package in overall performance, competing with AMD in terms of price for performance. This year, both the overall performance leader and the price leader in terms of performance were AMD-based examples.
In addition, all three clouds have competitive offers in terms of price: when it comes to price (and performance), all three clouds were statistically dead hot. Even slightly more expensive sample and storage combinations are potentially very competitive depending on the specific workload requirements.
Finally, storage and transmission costs have a major impact on overall operating costs: the “hidden” costs of storage and data transmission can have a greater impact on overall costs than the cost of the samples themselves, especially when it comes to creating a highly sustainable system. state application.
