Atari launched Sunnyvale, a major new experience Sandbox metaverse. Virtual space is the golden age of video games and the birthplace of Atari.

Sandbox, owned by Animoca Brands, recently released its latest Alpha Season 3 with 90 new metaverse experiences. Atari is one of the largest owners of Land or virtual real estate in The Sandbox. Now, it shows that it’s willing to spend resources to develop that Land, Atari X director Tyler Drewitz told GamesBeat in an interview.

New York-based Atari celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, and it remains one of the most popular consumer brands and game makers. The Atari Sunnyvale experience is based on nine classic Atari games and includes a full game based on Crystal Castles.

“We think people will appreciate the experience and it was worth the time to do it,” Drewitz said. “We will find out what they like. It’s a great entry point to Web3.”

Within Atari Sunnyvale, players will be able to explore and interact with each other and with non-player characters (NPCs) based on Atari characters.

Players can also participate in a number of quests and games, such as hide and seek, with winners receiving prizes. The Crystal Castles experience is a game where players race through a maze-like castle, collecting gems and fighting enemies. Crystal Castles is just the first of many games to come.

Sandbox is an immersive virtual world where players can create virtual worlds and games and participate in experiences created by others. The Voxel gaming platform enables creators to craft, play, share, collect and trade – in a decentralized environment with secure ownership and copyright of their creations, as all in-game items have a unique and immutable blockchain identifier. Atari Sunnyvale is introduced as part of Sandbox Alpha Season 3.

“We are excited to share Atari Sunnyvale with The Sandbox community and know it will attract even more Atari fans to the growing platform,” said Drewitz. “I’m excited for people to experience the deep, immersive environments based on our games created by our development partner. Metaworld Entertainment.”

Atari has sold some of its land in The Sandbox, but it remains one of the largest landowners in The Sandbox, and it will continue to work with partners to develop more experiences to engage the gaming community in the years to come.

“The vision of the team at The Sandbox and the creativity and energy they bring to the project make them an ideal partner for Atari,” said Atari CEO Wade Rosen. “We will continue to experiment and find new ways to bring programming to the open world, and we look forward to bringing more experiences to players.”

Atari X is an initiative that combines Atari’s blockchain interests into a single operation run entirely by Atari. It was founded four years ago by previous CEO Fred Chesnais, who left the company about 14 months ago. Drewitz joined in March (after 2.5 years of consulting), and he’s taking it in a new direction.

Through the combination of Web3 development partnerships, the Atari X initiative is building a robust blockchain ecosystem that connects gaming, utility and community, and will ensure that blockchain remains an important part of Atari’s business and long-term strategy.

“The reason we created this, which was one of the first things I created when I came on board, is because Atari is moving very early when we do licensing deals and partnerships starting in 2019,” Drewitz said. “We did licensing deals with Zed Run with Atari skins and Atari was the first mover on the blockchain. But it was a society or something else that we didn’t have.”

He added: “As you probably know, it’s very divisive between gaming and blockchain gaming, and there’s not a huge middle ground with crossover for fans. So with these partnerships, we were creating, but we didn’t have the space to interact with the cool projects and cool technologies that were being used. We just named them Atari and moved on.”

But now the company is tapping into these Web3 projects and creating a more engaging experience. The Atari Sunnyvale experience is a huge space where you can run around as a blocky Lego-like character.

“If Web2 is directly to the consumer, Web3 is directly to the community,” Drewitz said. “We can create this ecosystem of Atari X. We have Twitter with Discord and in the last week since launching our project we’ve gone from 3,000 to 50,000 on Twitter just a week ago. So it’s all starting now and moving pretty fast.

Drewitz said more blockchain projects are coming to help grow the ecosystem for Atari X.

“Quality gameplay was lacking in early blockchain games,” he said. “I’m really interested in people making great games, especially with Unreal 5 now entering the blockchain space. At Atari Sunnyvale we have favorite IPs like Pong, Centipede, Asteroids, Missile Command, Black Widow and Crystal Castles.

In the Missile Command area, you can see a large missile appear overhead. And you can take the elevator down to the Missile Command Center. Atari will be giving away some season passes for The Sandbox Alpha Season 3. The team wants to build Land in the Sandbox and do more cool things at a measured pace. Over time, they believe the metaverse will attract more users to their decentralized community of creators. They are mini games and more. they create

“We will engage the community and have building and asset competitions where winners can place their creations on our land,” Drewitz said. “The Crystal Castles experience feels like playing on an Atari 2600.”
